Jaeyhun's POV

I look up and see Brynn walking away fast. I wonder what she’s up to… I’m about to go and find out when the bell rings. “Time to start another calamitous day,” I mumble to myself.

And it was. At least homeroom was. I accidentally tripped over someone’s backpack, knocking over ten people and the entire back wall bookshelf in the process. I have to come back during lunch to clean up.

I was contemplating if I could pretend to be stuck in my locker the rest of the school day when I remembered biology. We get our DNA test results back today! Maybe I can carry out my locker plan after first period. Once I arrive, I sit down at my typical seat, in the back left corner.

“You’re early, Mr. Kang.”

“Yes, well, guess I’m a little excited. And seven minutes isn’t that premature.”

“Sure.”

It was four minutes before anyone else showed up. I tried to make a little small talk with Mrs. Jenkins at first, but ultimately let her work. By the time it was two minutes before class started, everyone had pretty much arrived.

“Okay, class. Due to the DNA results that arrived this morning–” Before she could finish her thought, Mrs. Jenkins got interrupted by a girl bursting into the classroom.

“Ms. Kang! Late again!”

“Technically I’m not late,” Brynn responded calmly. “It’s still a minute before class officially starts. You’re just early.”

“Brynndal Kang!”

“Okay! Okay! I’ll sit!”

“I don’t understand how you can hate people and love attention at the same time,” I tell her when she places herself next to me.

“It’s easy when you find everyone annoying except yourself. Plus, it keeps up my sense of mystery.”

“Did you just make a joke?”

“Nope. All truth. I don’t joke. Or lie. Okay, maybe I lie sometimes.”

“Also, Brynndal Kang? That’s your full name?”

“Man, you aren’t good at names, are you? You should look at the class list sometime. Get accustomed to all of the names and faces.”

“Maybe,” I say with a laugh. “Kang’s my last name too.”

“I know. It’s not an uncommon surname. Also, I’ve observed that I’m much more observant than you. Now shhh. Class is starting.”
