Brynn’s POV

I pace my room. I tried calling Jaehyun several more times after he abruptly hung up on me, but to no avail. What is he up to? Most likely getting into a boatload of trouble. Based on the question about my address, he’s coming here. Which is a mistake. If only he would pick up his dang phone. Then I could tell him how horrible this idea is, he would go home to his family, I would go through another loathsome family dinner, and everything would be right with the world! But nope! He just had to ignore me! And now we will both go through the most harrowing night of our lives.

I go downstairs with the intent of helping my mom with dinner, but really just wanting a better view of the front door. Right when I was putting the chicken in the oven, the inevitable happens.

“I’ll get the door!” I tell my mother as she heads toward the entrance after it rings.

“Don’t worry about it, Brynndal. You’ve been a big help already.”

“No!” I say, almost knocking my mother out of the way. “Sorry! I just… ordered a package! I want to get it!”

“Brynndal–”

I don’t hear the end of her sentence. I slip out the door, making sure I only open it a sliver so my mother doesn’t see who’s outside.

“Brynn? Let me inside.”

“No!” I whisper-hiss. “This is a bad idea. Go home.”

“I can’t.”

“Your parents don’t know you’re here, do they?”

He looks away. “They’re not my parents.”

“Neither are they!” I say, gesturing toward the house. “Say what you want, but at the end of the day they gave you up.”

“There are many reasons why a parent would give up a child! Especially with twins!”

“Fine! Do what you want! But don’t blame me.”

“You mean the girl who told me to look at my results in the first place?”

Right. That. I really am sorry. But I don’t look away as I step aside, giving him free access to my front door.
