My goal for the year 2025 was to keep a daily reflection journal. Unlike previous New Year Resolutions, as of May, I am keeping it. I don't write full diary entries every day (due to limited time and motivation), but simply filling as little as a line in a journal can be beneficial to mental health and wellness.

Self-Awareness: Reflecting on the happenings of the day opens the door to realizing new things about yourself. For example, if one has a tendency to get angry or depressed in certain situations, daily self-reflection could help create new habits to strengthen relationships and mental health. However, writing in a journal does not only have to exhibit negative attributes. It can also showcase good habits that one can now consciously ensure they continue, like exercising or practicing gratitude.

Improved Memory: Forcing yourself to remember what happened every day greatly improves both your short-term and your long-term memory. Connecting emotionally with certain events can create more vivid memories, making it easier to recall them later. Writing in a journal also helps structure one's thoughts, creating clearer mental images. Repetition is a also a great way to remember events both long-term and short-term.

Stress Reduction: Taking time out of your day to self-reflect can reduce one's stress. This is similar to keeping a gratitude journal, as recording and remembering daily happenings can help one realize all the things to be thankful for. It also allows people to consciously process emotions by forcing themselves to confront experiences that may not have been processed otherwise. Writing in a journal can also be a calming experience for many people, allowing people to take time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and slow down a little.

Increased Empathy: In increasing your self-awareness, you also increase your empathy. According to a study done by the National Library of Medicine, keeping a journal and reading what you had wrote helps people organize their experiences and leads to constructive criticism to encourage self-improvement. Emotions more often than not cloud judgement, logic, and reason, causing people to make decisions that they may come to regret later. Seeing and recognizing these actions after one feels more calm leads to increased empathy and change while becoming more self-aware during the height of emotions.

Overall, keeping a daily self-reflection journal has greatly improved my mental health and well-being, and is an excellent habit to start!
